More than Enough

We have so many blessings in our lives.  Yet, there is often more that we deeply desire.  The greatest blessing we have been given by God is His son, Jesus, who we can know and have a personal relationship with.  Recently, I’ve been reflecting on this question, “Is Jesus enough for me?”  And the answer for you and for me is “yes” whether we realize it or not.

The fact that Jesus loves each one of us deeply and wants to have a personal relationship with us should be more than enough for each and every one of us.  But often, we may find ourselves longing for that which we do not have.  Couples who deeply desire to have a baby, or another baby.  The desire for a true friend.  A job that provides and sustains.  Hope to be healed from a physical illness.  These longings and desires are good.  But what if we never receive exactly what we ask for in prayer, or if what we receive looks different than what we expected?  Will we still be satisfied?

I think if most of us spent time trying to come up with every single blessing in our lives, we would fill pages and pages and maybe not even be able to come up with everything.  And even if everything was stripped away, and we only had Jesus, that would still be enough.  Sometimes though, it’s hard for us to believe this.

A few days ago, the Church celebrated the memorial of St. Augustine.  One of the quotes he is most known for is, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”  These profound words speak to the reality that we will only be truly satisfied when we come to recognize that only God can fill us and we must find peace in Him alone.

When we pray, asking for what we want and desire, are we able to say, “and if not, You are enough Lord?”  My prayer for each of us today is that we would remember that Jesus loves us deeply and we can rest in the knowledge that He is enough!
